Preparing Your Tech Gear Before Packing Day
The hour you spend before anything is unplugged saves you an evening at the other end.
- Take reference photos: Photograph your cable runs and port connections while everything is still seated and working.
- Label and bag your cables: Group them by device with Velcro ties, then seal each set in a labelled zip bag.
- Back up your data: Save what matters to cloud storage or an external drive, and carry portable drives yourself.
How to Pack and Protect Your Custom PCs and Sensitive Hardware
Most towers travel whole. The case is shrink-wrapped, cushioned and boxed rather than stripped down, because every component you remove is one more thing to reseat later.
The important thing is to keep it upright for the entire journey. An upright tower holds its components correctly and keeps the weight of a large graphics card off the motherboard. Heavy cards and CPU coolers are worth removing, wrapping in antistatic material and carrying separately.
Packing Multi-Monitors and Motorised Standing Desks
Screens and desk frames are where most of the damage happens. Taking a few minutes to learn how to pack your monitors properly makes a huge difference:
- How to move computer monitors: Unmount the displays, face each panel with rigid cardboard, and use the original boxes.
- How to move standing desks: Lower motorised desks to minimum height, unplug the control box, and lock the frame.
- How to clear tight lifts: Detach legs and heavy monitor arms for HDB corridors and condo lifts, bagging the hardware.
Reassembling Your Gaming Setup Efficiently
- Place the heavy things first: Position the desk and monitor mounts near your power points before any electronics come out of their boxes.
- Rebuild from your photos: Route the cables the way they were and reconnect peripherals without working it out twice.
- Test before you tidy: Run the desk through a full elevation cycle and boot the PC before you bundle anything.
